Every summer, something extraordinary happens in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
It's called San Fu (三伏天) — the three hottest periods of the year, spanning approximately 20 days between mid-July and mid-August. Most people see it as simply the peak of summer heat. In TCM, it's seen as something far more valuable: a window of opportunity.
What Is San Fu?
San Fu is based on the ancient Chinese calendar. It marks the days when yang energy — the body's inner warmth and vitality — is at its annual peak. The surface of your body is hot, but deep inside, something shifts.
This is the paradox of San Fu: while you feel heat externally, your internal organs are actually more open, more receptive, and more ready to release what has been stored all year.
冬病夏治 — Treat Winter Disease in Summer
This is the core principle behind San Fu.
In TCM, many chronic conditions — cold hands and feet, joint pain, low energy, seasonal allergies, even dull, tired skin — are rooted in cold and stagnation that accumulated during previous winters. By summer, this cold has settled deep into your tissues, where it's hard to reach.
But during San Fu, the body's yang rises to meet the external heat. The "cold" inside becomes accessible. This is your one chance each year to move it out.
Why You Can't Afford to Miss It
- Once a year. The San Fu window is short — about 20 days. If you miss it, your body holds onto that stored cold and stagnation for another full year.
- Deeper results. The same practice — moxa, gua sha, herbal soaks — works 3–5 times more effectively during San Fu than any other time of year.
- Energy shift. This isn't maintenance. It's a reset. Like changing the oil in your body's engine.
How to Use San Fu for Your Skin and Body
The warmth of San Fu makes it the ideal time for facial and body rituals that move stagnation and restore circulation:
🔥 Warm — Moxibustion
The penetrating warmth of aged mugwort works deeper during San Fu. A ceramic moxa pot gliding along the jawline and cheekbones during these weeks can reach stagnation that surface treatments can't touch.
💆 Sculpt — Gua Sha
With circulation already heightened by the season, gua sha becomes more effective. The Green Sandalwood Gua Sha Comb lifts, contours, and drains — but during San Fu, the results last longer.
👁 Refresh — Acupressure
The ZenEye Acupoint Wand targets the delicate area around your eyes, where cold and stagnation often settle as puffiness and dark circles. San Fu is the best time to release them.
🛁 Soak — Mugwort Herbal Bath
San Fu is also the best time to soak. Drop a 3-year aged wild mugwort disc into hot water — foot bath or full bath — and let the herb's warmth draw stagnation out through your soles. In TCM, warming the feet moves blood upward: brighter skin, lighter body, deeper sleep.

🌿 Restore from the Core — Qi Ai Navel Patch
In TCM, the navel (Shenque point, 神阙 — also known as the navel acupoint) is the gateway to your body's deepest energy. When your core is cold, everything suffers: digestion, immunity, sleep — and yes, your skin. Dull complexion, dark circles, a face that looks flat no matter what serum you use — these are signs that warmth isn't reaching where it needs to go.
This is where the Nan Huai Jin (南怀瑾) formula comes in. One of the most revered TCM scholars of the 20th century, Nan Huai Jin developed a precise three-ingredient navel patch: 3-year aged Qi Ai mugwort from Qichun, Hubei (the same region that supplied China's imperial court for over a thousand years), longan flesh (桂圆) to nourish the heart and blood, and Sichuan pepper (花椒) to drive warmth deep into the core.
During San Fu, when the body's channels are wide open, a warming patch placed on the navel penetrates 3–5 times deeper than at any other time of year. Apply before bed. Sleep. Wake up warmer — and let your face show the difference.
